Gamm Saan is the name that the Chinese gave to western regions of North America (California, Canada, USA, and British Colombia.) After gold was discovered in California in 1848, thousands of Chinese traveled to California to join the gold rush and find riches. After they found gold in British Colombia and Australia. California became known as the Old Rush Mountain.
Amy Tan hasn't really mentioned much about gold yet. But, she talked a little quick blurb about it in Lindo Jong's story at the end. "See the gold metal I can wear now." (63)
