The character that I noticed a lot and had lots of little things connected to in this chapter was Jody Starks. Joe Starks always wants things to go his way. He pushes Janie around making sure she is always in the store and not on the porch talking with the folks. He would also get jealous so he would make her pull her hair up so no one could enjoy it. He would get fussy when Janie would screw up in the store. Some times like on page 73 Hurston uses Joe and other times Jody. He treats everyone around him like servants and expects them to do what he wants. But there is a kindness to Jody like when he buys the mule and let the mule enjoy its last days in bliss. “You have tuh have power tuh free things and dat makes you lak uh king uh something” (78). What I saw in this quote is that Jody can free Janie of Logan Killicks and he freed the mule but Jody cant’ free Janie from himself.
